Abstract

Conception rates to a single first insemination in cycling dairy cows often range between 55% and 75% . This paper outlines the physiological processes that define this outcome and where possible gains could be made. While herd management issues do influence the outcome of a reproduction progamme quite significantly, the main impetus of this review is to identify some opportunities that could raise the threshold level of fertility in New Zealand dairy herds.
